What is Green Building?
In short, green building is a process that effectively and efficiently lessens the impact of homeownership on the environment.  This includes the site development, house construction process, the use of materials, and how the home is operated.  The end result provides  a healthy environment for the home owner and low operating costs. 
The Building Envelope
The way a building is constructed, with which materials and in what region and orientation will directly impact a building's performance, durability, thermal mass and effectiveness.  In other words, no two buildings are alike.  The building envelope and the way it performs is the most important feature of the structure.   All property owners should consider materials that have the ability to store energy (thermal mass), provide low air infiltration, mold and pest resistant, and 
most important, use materials that do not deteorate over time.  Building envelopes that do not deteorate are basically maintenance free structures. 
Site Orientation
The direction a building is situated on a site can be a major contributor in helping to reduce mechanical requirements.
Landscaping
Always consider native and drought tolerant landscape design.

Energy Resource
We have the ability to generate our own electricity.  Utilizing existing technologies, such as geothermal, wind and solar are a few examples of green energy generation.
Solar
Solar applications effectively include electricity generation through photovoltaics, and water heating applications. 
Water Resource
Water is a logical place to make informed choices.  A tremendous amounts of savings are available through water conservation and management.
Interior Air Quality
Simple awareness and product selection can avoid harmful elements that compromise the air we breathe and our health.
Finishes
We can avoid exposing ourselves and our families to many harmful toxins by carefully  selecting the finishes that suround us.
Windows and Doors
One of the greatest inefficiencies, with respect to mechanical systems, comes from using cheap exterior doors and windows.  That is no different from building a cheap house and placing a $30k photovoltaic system on the roof.
Lighting
Always consider the sun's daylight hours and accessibility.  Also, energy efficient lighting designs and fixtures reduce the electrical load and  lower cooling requirements.
